Love is Expressed in Seven Major Areas

Each area is of vital importance, and absolutely essential to balanced, happy living.

1. Love Your God - Love Your Universe

St. Augustine believed that the only guide necessary for the good life was to “Love God and do as you please.” If we truly love God, the All Good, we can never do anything unworthy. Our identification with the One is sufficient to keep us aiming for to noble purpose and ideals.

The Universe is the Source of our supply of all things. Many people profess love for God but want to hang onto their petty selfishness and hostility at the same time. This won't work, and only produces problems, troubles and illness.

Universe demands more than lip service. Love of the Universe must be constantly demonstrated in all that we do. All that we say, think, feel and do, gives evidence of our capacity to love. Let's determine to love your God - your Universe and go on from there.

2. Love Life!

I love life, and I love to live. Love of life releases the energy of the spheres through our entire being. Life is Energy—Spirit—Life! The will to live is our strongest drive. When this weakens, we die. Life is for living.

You have heard it said, “Only two things are inevitable: death and taxes” But, this is not so. The only thing inevitable is life. We must live. If we resist the flow of life we break under the strain. If we flow with it, we are swept along to victory. Life is a continuous, never-ending process. The sooner we start living, really living, the better.

3. Love Nature

St. Augustine believed that the only guide necessary for the good life was to “Love God and do as you please.” If we truly love God, the All Good, we can never do anything unworthy. Our identification with the One is sufficient to keep us aiming for to noble purpose and ideals.

4. Love Yourself

If you love the Universe, life, and Nature, you must love yourself. Your first expression of love must be towards yourself. If you hate yourself, you will hate everything else. We are creatures of infinite potential. Shakespeare was caught up in the contemplation of the wonder of his own species: ‘‘What a piece of work is a man! How noble in reason! How infinite in faculty! In form and moving how express and admirable! In action how like an angel! In apprehension how like a god! The beauty of the world! The paragon of animals!” (Hamlet, ActII,Sc.2).

It is you who is being described. Love yourself. The real Self which you have been entrusted with to express, to develop, to glorify. Love what you really are, and you will have taken the first step toward fulfilling your destiny.

5. Love People

All the reasons for loving yourself as an expression of God automatically apply to others. We are all expressions of the Divine Fact. We are all members of the same family. We are brothers because we have the same Father, no matter how divergent our worldly paths may be. The Christ, the Higher Self, is within each one of us.

To reject or dislike people is to reject God and deny the whole principle of love. We may not like what a person does, but we must love him. We must identify with him, learn to understand and help him. Through the love we share with others, we find ourselves. When we shut off love, we shut off a large portion of life. Interest, encouragement, sharing, helpfulness, concern and sympathy are all means by which we express love for other people. We find ourselves in others; in every living human being. ‘There is One Mind common to all individual men.” (Emerson)

6. Love Your World

Your world is what you make it. It is an extension and a reflection of your own consciousness. Your world is neither good nor bad. It just is. The world really has no power to move you or affect you in any way. It seems to, but when we see it in its proper perspective in the scheme of things, we recognize it as effect only, and not cause. Respect and honor your environment, treasure it for future generations.

Enjoy the world and participate in its actions. Luxuriate in its comforts. Use the things of worldly experience wisely, for actions and objects have their place in the Great Plan. Conveniences can make life easier. Possessions and money can enrich us if we use them wisely and possess them instead of letting them possess us. Love the world with harmony. Do not reject it; accept it and remember that you make your world what it is and you have control over it and everything in it.

Never relinquish this birthright. Remain always in charge of your experiences. Keep every aspect of your life in its proper place and view it in its proper perspective. The world is your oyster. You are sitting on top of it. If you don't like the world the way it is, go out and make a better one—one that you and everyone else can love. That will keep you so busy that you won't have time to sit around and cry about what a mess this one is in. There may be a reason. Let's reverse the action and build our world on love.

7. Love Your Work

If you don't like what you are doing, change it. No matter what adjustment is involved or how much inconvenience or temporary loss of income is incurred, change jobs otherwise you will die in one you don't like. Life is too short to squander in unrewarding work. It is through work that we express the creative urge within us. It is through work that we perfect ourselves. It is through work that we give form to the creative energy which flows through us.

It is through work that we live. Work is therapy. Let love flow through your work. Let your work express the love that you feel for God, life, nature, your¬self, people and your world. Be proud of your work. Exult in it. Pour yourself into it. Hold nothing back. Be your own boss! Let your work be your monument. Don't worry about how it is received or what reward it will bring. Do what you like best. Do it to the best of your ability, and you create the action of love in the great scheme of things.

This and so much more is possible with love in your heart and kindness in your mind.
